Human trafficking is modern-day slavery, and the fastest-growing criminal industry in the world. It is the recruitment of people by means of threat, force, coercion, or deception for the purpose of exploitation. Sex trafficking is one of the most profitable forms of trafficking and involves several kinds of sexual exploitation, such as prostitution, pornography, strip clubs, escort services, brothel work and the commercial sexual abuse of children. However, this problem isn’t limited to poorer countries. It even happens in the United States, including northern Nevada.
Historically, adult sex workers (coerced or otherwise) in the state of Nevada have had extremely limited resources available to assist and facilitate their transition out of that world. While agencies exist in northern Nevada to help victims of domestic violence or sexual assault, the unique, concealed, and often dangerous set of circumstances that surround victims of commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) and human trafficking make this group more vulnerable and more difficult to help.
Who We Are
We are Awaken, the only organization in northern Nevada solely focused and trained to work with victims of CSE. We believe that with the right opportunities and support, locally trafficked women and girls can overcome circumstances such as poverty, racism and gender-based violence perpetuating CSE.
Victims of CSE need and deserve specialized treatment, as well as non-judgmental healing and recovery services provided by a staff with relevant life experience and training. At Awaken, we have a comprehensive service model and center established for victims of CSE. Our many programs offer a holistic approach to help victims with both financial barriers, and emotional / cultural barriers that victims face as they re-enter society as free women and girls.
What We Do
Awaken provides a plethora of services for both victims, and the community as a whole. Learn more about the ways we help women, and the city of Reno.
