OUR SITES

Since our launch in 2011, we've made a tangible impact, touching the lives of over 900 women and children in Northern Nevada and empowering them to reclaim their freedom and dignity. Last year, we announced our expansion into Green Bay, Wisconsin, bringing our mission to new communities and giving even more survivors the chance to rebuild their lives.

Awaken offers preventative education targeting the most vulnerable population: disadvantaged youth. We work with youth groups to talk to local students about the realities of human trafficking and how to prevent it from happening to them or their loved ones.

We offer customized services for women and children affected by sex trafficking, with a focus on tailored programs for adults and youth. Working with community organizations, our goal is to help victims rebuild their lives and access the support they need in areas where services are limited.

We advocate for social change and educate the community about commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking through workshops, outreach, and events. By engaging grassroots supporters and policymakers, Awaken strives to combat commercial sexual exploitation.

Real survivors. Real stories.

Every woman entering Awaken has a unique story and experience. Some are still struggling and healing–but all of our survivors are recognized for their strength and are celebrated for their journey to becoming their authentic selves.

“They didn’t shame me or guilt me or make me feel bad about my life choices. They intervened and were a support system for me. To thank them, I stay on the right path. The best way I can give back is by telling my story.”

A common argument in favor of legalizing prostitution in the United States is that it is a "choice". But is prostitution really a choice? Nevada’s had a legalized sex trade for 48 years and its illegal sex trade is the largest in the country — 63 percent larger than the next largest state. A 2013 study in the European Journal of Law and Economics compared data from countries that had legalized prostitution versus those that hadn’t. It found that sex trafficking is “most prevalent in countries where prostitution is legalized.” Sex buyers in Nevada are notoriously unconcerned with accessing sex legally or illegally — and many don’t know the difference. Women and children have paid the price for Nevada’s laws and 71% of those sold for sex in Nevada are at risk of having been trafficked.

Sex trafficking is the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, obtaining, patronizing, or soliciting of a person for the purpose of a commercial sex act, in which the commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such act has not obtained 18 years of age (2015 Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act).
